Formosa Jade Oolong

This delicacy comes from the island of Taiwan and is popular and appreciated worldwide. Its rolled leaves form small, firm balls. In the cup, it presents itself in a green-gold color, its aroma is characterized by peach blossom-delicate fruitiness.

Its name and its history

Oolong means "black dragon". Formosa Jade Oolong is more similar to green tea than black tea. Due to its light oxidation, it combines the taste and health benefits of both varieties. A Chinese legend tells that a tea farmer, startled by a terrifying dragon during the harvest, fled in terror and only gathered the courage to return to his plantation a few days later. The picked green leaves had by then oxidized a little and sun-dried. The tea, which the farmer, not prone to waste, prepared from it not without skepticism, tasted wonderfully to his joyful surprise and boundless relief. And the gruesome monster, to which he owed his discovery, henceforth gave its name to this specialty.

This is undoubtedly a pretty, imaginative and wild romantic story. In reality, it happened quite soberly that loose green tea began to oxidize on its own during the long transport routes through mountainous landscapes of China. Around the year 1800, Oolong tea finally became known in Taiwan.

Its preparation:

Infuse three to four teaspoons of the pellets with one liter of water that has been brought to a boil and cooled slightly, and let everything steep for three minutes before pouring the golden, fragrant liquid through a sieve. Just as with green tea, we recommend making several infusions. Let these steep only very briefly, no longer than about one minute.

Storage and shelf life:

If you store the tea away from heat sources, dry, airtight and protected from light, you can store it for at least one year without loss of quality. Atmospheric oxygen and direct sunlight are not good for it; the packaging in which our products are delivered already protects it from this.
